Volunteering at Brigadoon
Volunteers are an essential part of our program. Without people willing to share some of their time and enthusiasm we would be unable to offer the services we do.

We are always looking for new volunteers, so if you have a few hours to spare, are aged between 14 and 80 and would like to become part of the RDA Brigadoon family please contact us for more information.

No previous experience with horses or people with disabilities is necessary.

What sort of jobs are available to volunteers?

RDA Brigadoon relies on volunteers for many functions within the centre. Volunteers can:

  • Lead horses or assist riders in sessions.
  • Help with the care and grooming of horses.
  • Help with the training of horses for our programs.
  • Help with stable management and cleaning tack.
  • Help with centre maintenance tasks.
  • Help with administrative tasks.
  • Help with awareness & fundraising.
  • Help in working bees.
  • Become a member of our Centre Management Committee.

How often would I be expected to work at RDA Brigadoon?

Volunteers can choose a workload that suits their availability. Session are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. You can choose what day(s) you volunteer, how regularly and for how long. All that we ask is that you try to be consistent in your commitment and that you notify us with as much advance warning as possible if you are unable to come at any time.

What training is provided?

RDA Brigadoon provides a induction training program to orient you to the centre and help you become familiar with your role and the policies and procedures of RDA. We also provide on-the-job training and regular feedback for volunteers as they gain more experience in their roles. Ad-hoc workshops on specific topics of interest are also offered throughout the year at centre and State level.

Is insurance provided for volunteers?

RDA prides itself on its safety record. All volunteers are provided with training, which is important to minimise the risk of injury to riders, horses and volunteers. Our horses are also carefully selected and well trained for their jobs. In the event of an accident occurring, all volunteers are covered by RDA's Personal Accident insurance.

How do I become a volunteer at RDA Brigadoon?

Interested volunteers should contact us to discuss your experience, the types of roles that you might be interested in and what volunteer vacancies we currently have. You will then be invited in to visit the centre and see us in operation. This allows you to decide whether you think volunteering at RDA Brigadoon would suit you and we can also better assess how we can best use your expertise. We will then ask you to complete a Volunteer Application Form (which includes consenting to abide by RDA policies and a working with children check). Induction training will then be provided along with individualised on-the-job training. Our nationally accredited coaches provide this training for volunteers.

All RDA Brigadoon volunteers are required to have a Working with Children Check. Application forms are available from Main Australia Post Offices, these forms need to be completed by yourself and signed by the President or Secretary of our centre before being submitted at a Main Australia Post Office where you will have your photo taken for your WWC ID card.

When filling out the WWCC application form please remember the following:

Category: 12 (Association or club)
Organisation Name: Riding for the Disabled Assocation of Western Australia Inc (please do not put our specific centre RDA Brigadoon)
Organisation Representative: Our centre President or Secretary is authorised by the State to represent RDAWA in these applications.
